The Hymn of the Pearl
I enjoyed designing this book based on an ancient story retold by Lori Driggs and illustrated by Tshikamba. Couched as a children’s story in this retelling, The Hymn of the Pearl is a spiritually significant tale that answers some of life’s most pressing questions: “Where did I come from?” “Why am I here?” and “What is my pearl (or purpose) here?” Since it was originally written in Syriac, I chose an Arabic calligraphic typeface (Sabana) for the title and a classic marbled paper for the end sheets. The jacket was printed on metallic paper with white backing behind the title, hands, pearl, and flowers.
